The meeting took place within the framework of a previously concluded bilateral agreement.

A dialogue took place at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute between Russian scientists and representatives of Indian scientific and government organizations. The event is aimed at deepening the partnership enshrined in the memorandum of cooperation that was signed in 2024.

During the conversation, the Russian side introduced its colleagues to the capabilities of its unique laboratories and research complexes. Indian participants, in turn, shared the experience of their national polar program and expressed their intention to intensify work in the Arctic region.

One of the important topics of the negotiations was the use of Russian scientific infrastructure for common projects. Indian researchers were interested in the prospect of working at stations at high latitudes, including facilities on the Spitsbergen archipelago and the North Pole drifting platform.

According to Deputy Director of AARI Maxim Tatarkin, the parties found mutual understanding on key issues. The priority is to conduct research related to climate change, monitoring ice conditions, as well as coordination in the field of transport and technical support in harsh Arctic conditions.

The agreements reached create the basis for the implementation of specific joint programs. Scientific and technical cooperation between Russia and India in the Arctic is considered as a strategically important area that promotes the study and development of polar territories.

Source: AARI

Image: Svetlana Shatskova

Experts from the two countries held talks in St. Petersburg to outline specific ways for joint scientific activities in the polar latitudes.
