The breakthrough technology is based on catalysts made from available iron, which opens the way to cost-effective recycling of harmful emissions.

The global problem of carbon dioxide pollution requires non-standard solutions. Until now, effective methods for converting CO₂ into useful products have relied on precious metal catalysts. metals, such as platinum. Despite their good efficiency, their high cost made mass implementation of the technology almost impossible.

A scientific group, which included specialists from NUST MISIS, Moscow State University and the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, proposed a budget-friendly and promising alternative. Iron was chosen as the basis for the catalyst. This metal is characterized by its availability, low price and the ability to produce it in large volumes, which is critical for industry.

The new development opens up a number of practical advantages. Large enterprises, such as factories, thermal power plants and oil refineries, will have the opportunity to utilize part of their own emissions directly on site. Instead of simply releasing CO₂ into the atmosphere, it could be converted into valuable raw materials.

The resulting fuel can become a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional oil and gas. But the main incentive for business will be economic benefit. Cheap iron-based feedstocks make carbon dioxide recycling financially attractive. Companies will be able not only to reduce harmful emissions, but also to derive additional profit from this.

Scaling CO₂ fuel technology can radically change the industry’s approach to the environment. Businesses will have a real economic interest in reducing their carbon footprint. This is an important step not only in the fight for a cleaner planet, but also in creating a sustainable economy where waste is turned into resources.

The material was prepared with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.

Source: @CarierNews

Photo: NUST MISIS

Researchers from the country’s leading scientific centers have developed an innovative method for processing carbon dioxide.
