According to a new study, domestic capacity can cover the growing demand for raw materials for industrial robots without imported supplies.

By 2030, Russia plans to increase the fleet of industrial robots from the current 12.8 thousand to 123 thousand units. Such growth will require a significant amount of rare earth metals – about 61.5 tons. Calculations are based on data on the content of rare earth metals in the most common models of robots with a load capacity of up to 16 kg.

Each industrial robot uses approximately 500 grams of rare earth raw materials. The main part of the elements is used in the production of permanent magnets – key components of modern automated systems. To achieve the planned robotization indicators, it will be necessary to reach the level of 194 robots per 10 thousand workers.

Existing production capacity significantly exceeds projected demand. The Solikamsk magnesium plant annually produces about 2.5 thousand tons of rare earth metal oxides. From this volume, approximately 350 tons of metals for magnets are produced – this is enough not only for robotics, but also for other high-tech industries.

Robotics is becoming one of the most promising areas for the consumption of rare earth metals in Russia. Domestic manufacturers of rare earth metals are ready to guarantee a stable supply of raw materials to expand the fleet of industrial robots on time. This creates a solid foundation for accelerated digital transformation of industry and the development of advanced manufacturing technologies.

The material was prepared with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.

 Source: @dprom

Russian industry will fully meet the needs of robotics for rare earth minerals. metals by the end of the decade.
