The discovery was made by a team of archaeologists from University Basilicates using modern geophysical methods. The find will shed light on the history of one of the significant cultural centers of Southern Italy.

An important discovery has been made in the archaeological park of Heraclea, located in Policoro, Italy. Researchers have discovered traces of a huge semicircular structure hidden underground. Experts are confident that they have found an ancient theater built for performances and public meetings.

Geophysical the study showed clear concentric magnetic traces, indicating the complex architecture of the structure. The theater is located on a natural slope overlooking the ancient city, directly opposite the sanctuary of Dionysus. This deity was the patron of theater and winemaking, which confirms the purpose of the building.

The excavations will be led by Dr. Carmelo Colelli. According to him, investing in archeology means investing in the preservation and renewal of cultural narratives. Heraclea demonstrates how archeology and interinstitutional collaboration create sustainable knowledge.

The opening of the theater in Heraclea was a significant event for archeology and history. The research continues, and scientists expect new finds that will expand our understanding of the life of the ancient city. Visitors to the archaeological park will be able to see the restored ancient theater in the future.

The material was prepared with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.

 Source: @arch_history_news

Scientists have discovered a large theater complex in the ancient city of Heraclea.
