New navigation and scanning technologies offer opportunities to improve mining safety.

At the Yakovlevsky GOK, part of the Severstal company, tests of specialized drones for underground work were successfully completed. The technology, which until recently seemed experimental, has now proven its practical value in difficult mine conditions.

A key advancement was the ability of drones to operate without a GPS signal. In deep mines, the devices use a combination of sensors and computer vision to navigate and avoid obstacles. This allows them to confidently navigate spaces where traditional navigation methods are unavailable.

An important advantage was stable communication: drones demonstrate stable control and video signal transmission at a distance of up to 100 meters in a straight line and up to 50 meters around the corner of a mine. Such indicators provide reliable control over equipment even in difficult underground conditions.

The peculiarity of the technology lies in the dual function of the devices. They simultaneously conduct real-time video monitoring and laser scanning to build accurate 3D models. This allows you to obtain comprehensive data on the condition of workings without additional equipment.

Drones have already scanned a hundred-meter section of the mine. Experts compare the obtained digital data with the results of classical surveying. If accuracy is confirmed, this will dramatically speed up the documentation process and increase the detail of technical documentation.

The next stage will be the adaptation of drones to inspect vertical ore passes – the most difficult task in underground navigation. The successful implementation of this project will completely eliminate personnel from working in hazardous areas, which will significantly increase the safety of mining operations. The technology confirms its potential and promises a real increase in the efficiency of excavation surveys.

The material was prepared with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.

Source: @mst_news

Domestic drones for underground work have proven their effectiveness in real mine conditions.
