On board are members of the 71st Russian Antarctic Expedition, which promises to bring breakthrough results in the study of the southern continent.

About 500 polar explorers representing 23 scientific institutions of the country are taking part in this large-scale project. The research program includes more than 47 comprehensive areas of work – from studying the microworld to space observations.

Scientists will focus on climate change, ocean processes and unique Antarctic organisms. Particular attention will be paid to the search for new medicinal compounds in local microorganisms. Medical research will be carried out using modern diagnostic systems.

As noted by Alexander Makarov, director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, the new expedition represents an important stage in the development of domestic polar research. It’s not easy field season, but a comprehensive program that combines basic science, advanced technology and international cooperation.

During the winter, specialists will continue meteorological, radiological and geophysical observations. The ship will have to travel about 15,000 kilometers, delivering polar explorers, wintering personnel and over 2,000 tons of expeditionary cargo to Antarctic stations.

Russian researchers are ready for new discoveries in the most mysterious region of the planet. The data obtained will help to better understand global climate processes and expand scientific understanding of Antarctica.

The material was prepared with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.

 Source: @aari_official

Photo: AARI

The scientific expedition vessel “Akademik Fedorov” set sail from St. Petersburg to the shores of Antarctica.
