The technology using bacteria and calcium peroxide has already been successfully tested.

The problem of oil waste in the Arctic remains one of the most acute. These are not only the consequences of current mining, but also the legacy of past years – abandoned landfills. Existing treatment methods, such as incineration or chemical treatment, are often ineffective in harsh northern conditions. They require a lot of energy, and low temperatures reduce the activity of bacteria that can decompose oil.

Specialists from the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas have found a solution to this problem. They have developed an innovative approach that combines the use of bacterial drugs and calcium peroxide. This substance plays a key role, as it supplies microorganisms with the oxygen necessary for their life and processing of contaminants. The whole process takes place inside geotubes – special containers that can be placed directly in the open air.

To achieve maximum effect, scientists calculated the optimal amount of reagents using a mathematical model. This allowed us to achieve impressive results: the level of pollution neutralization ranged from 80% to 93%. The new technology is especially relevant, given that the Arctic deposits Today it accounts for about 21% of all oil produced in Russia.

The implementation of this development will significantly improve the environmental safety of the Arctic region. The technology is ready for use and opens up new opportunities for restoring fragile northern nature.

The material was prepared with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.

Source: @dprom

Photo: upackunion.ru

Gubkinsky scientists university presented a combined method for eliminating oil pollution in the Arctic.
