The project is being implemented by specialists from JSC Central PGO as part of the second stage of the federal program “Geology: Revival of a Legend.” The goal is to find new sources of durable metal, critical for domestic industry.

Geologists are exploring a vast area of 37 square kilometers within the Sosukchan ore cluster. This metal is extremely durable and is included in the list of strategic and scarce raw materials. The specialists are faced with a task discover underground ore bodies containing tungsten trioxide and accurately estimate the extent of inferred resources. In parallel there will be grade potential of the site for associated mining of gold, copper, tin and bismuth.

According to Alexey Koval, chief geologist of JSC Central PGO, the 2025 field season has already ended. During it, a complex of modern geological exploration activities was successfully completed. To improve the efficiency of the search, advanced technologies were used, including aerial photography from drones, detailed geophysical and lithogeochemical studies. All work was carried out in full across the entire study area and received a positive conclusion from the state examination.

Currently, geologists have moved to the stage of desk processing of the collected data. Based on this analysis, the contours of the most promising areas with high ore concentrations will be clarified. The next important step will be drilling work planned for 2026. It is drilling that will make it possible to verify the identified geochemical anomalies and finally confirm the presence of industrial reserves of tungsten. The project to search for scarce metal in Yakutia is planned to be fully completed by the end of 2027.

The material was prepared with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.

Source: @rusgeology

In the remote Ust-Yansky region of Yakutia, large-scale search work at strategic tungsten deposits.
