This strategic facility will serve the largest Vostok Oil project. Oil for storage will be supplied from three fields: Irkinskoye, Payakhskoye and Peschanoye.

The idea of creating such a storage facility arose back in 2021. Then Rosneft’s subsidiaries – Taimyrneftegaz and NGH-Nedra – received licenses to study the possibility of its construction. Official permission from Rosnedra was received two years later, in 2023.

Underground storage technology has become especially relevant during the pandemic, when oil prices collapsed. A sharp reduction in production was unprofitable and could harm the entire industry. Unlike Saudi Arabia, which stores surplus in tankers, Russia has chosen a more reliable and capital method – underground tanks.

Initially, experts assumed that building such a facility from scratch would take about ten years. However, a faster method – pumping oil into depleted formations of old fields – allows you to create a storage facility in just 3-5 years. Judging by the timing of implementation, Rosneft took advantage of this accelerated option. This decision can also be associated with relatively small, operational storage volumes.

This project strengthens the country’s energy security and opens up new opportunities for flexible production management in conditions of market fluctuations. Find out how modern technologies are changing the Russian oil industry.

The material was prepared with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.

Source: @nefte_baza

Photo: news.mail.ru

The Rosneft company commissioned its first underground storage complex oil .
