The development could change the approach to gasoline production, making it more environmentally friendly.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The honeycomb-like facility captures CO\u2082 from the atmosphere using a liquid sorbent based on potassium hydroxide. Next, carbon dioxide goes through several stages of processing:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Electrolysis of the water produced by the reaction to release hydrogen.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Conversion of CO\u2082 and hydrogen into methanol.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Synthesis of gasoline from methanol.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resulting fuel is fully compatible with conventional engines and does not contain harmful impurities &#8211; sulfur, ethanol and heavy <a data-id=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/metally-v-tvoem-smartfone\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/metally-v-tvoem-smartfone\/\">metals<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During tests on the roof of a New York skyscraper, the installation produced 0.5 liters of gasoline. Its daily capacity is about 3.7 liters of fuel while processing 0.038 m\u00b3 CO\u2082. By the fall, Aircela plans to begin supplying equipment to industrial and commercial customers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the technology looks promising, its cost-effectiveness is still questionable. The process requires expensive reagents and significant energy consumption.
