The metal plays a key role in the transition to a low-carbon economy, and its shortage could seriously slow clean energy development.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Copper is widely used in the production of solar panels, wind turbines and electric vehicle batteries. However, since the opening <a data-id=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/ai-nahodit-mestorozhdeniya\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/ai-nahodit-mestorozhdeniya\/\">deposits<\/a> It takes an average of 17 years before production begins, which poses serious challenges to meeting growing demand in a timely manner.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, more than 70% of the processing of critical minerals, including copper, is concentrated in China. Although mining occurs around the world &#8211; in Africa, Australia and Latin America &#8211; such dependence on one region poses risks to global supplies.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fatih Birol, head of the IEA, called on countries to:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Accelerate the launch of new <a data-id=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/intervyu-s-borisom-kurczevym-chto-nuzhno-dlya-uspeha-startapa\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/intervyu-s-borisom-kurczevym-chto-nuzhno-dlya-uspeha-startapa\/\">projects<\/a> for copper mining.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Increase processing volumes.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Look for alternatives, such as aluminum.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Develop international cooperation to diversify supply chains.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without these measures, rising prices for copper and related technologies are inevitable, which will hit consumers&#8217; pockets and slow the transition to green energy.
