Scientists will study its impact on the carbon cycle and climate change.

In 2025, Kamchatka State University is launching a project to study soil respiration, a process that plays a key role in the planet’s carbon balance. The work is being carried out within the framework of the Priority 2030 program with the support of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

For research, the laboratory purchased modern equipment: specialized cameras for monitoring soil and plant respiration, a high-precision gas analyzer and software for processing climate data. In 2024, test measurements of carbon dioxide have already been carried out at the Avachinsky and Mutnovsko-Gorelovsky group of volcanoes.

In the new stage, scientists will focus on analyzing soil respiration, which may increase due to global warming. There are also plans to study the degassing of the lithosphere of the Kuril-Kamchatka arc and the emission of methane from lakes and swamps.

Data from the CMIP6 project, including 700 climate parameters, will help in the analysis. In addition, the laboratory uses information from 34 weather stations in Kamchatka to compare model calculations with real observations.

The results of the study will be useful for agriculture, tourism and mining. For example, farmers will receive data on temperature and humidity, and tour operators will receive data on snow cover.

As the head of the laboratory, S. Tikhonov, noted, the goal of the project is not only scientific discoveries, but also the practical application of data for adaptation to climate change in the region.

Source: neftegaz.ru

KamSU named after.
