This is an important step in the implementation of the project to achieve carbon neutrality in the region by 2025.

The Sakhalin region became a pilot site for Russia’s first climate experiment, initiated by President Vladimir Putin in 2022. The goal of the project is to achieve carbon neutrality in the region by 2025, when the volume of greenhouse gas emissions will be fully offset by their absorption.

The experiment involves 35 companies that have quotas on greenhouse gas emissions for the period from 2024 to 2028. During this time, participants must reduce emissions by 160 thousand tons of CO2 equivalent, which is comparable to the annual emissions of 35 thousand cars.

Sakhalinenergo, part of the RusHydro group, was the first to register 684 units of quota fulfillment, which is equivalent to 684 tons of CO2. These units can be sold to other participants in the experiment who exceed their quotas.

According to Olga Gogunskaya, CEO of the operator of the Register of Carbon Units (RUE), the release of the first quota fulfillment units marks a new stage in the development of the Russian carbon market. “This is a historic moment for the country, opening up new business opportunities and facilitating the transition to a low-carbon economy,” she said.

Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov emphasized that the experiment is aimed at developing mechanisms for regulating emissions, including verification of reporting and inventory of emissions.

Governor of the Sakhalin Region Valery Limarenko noted that the project not only creates economic opportunities, but also improves the environmental situation in the region.

The Sakhalin experiment was an important step in the implementation of Russia’s climate strategy. The region’s successful experience can be scaled to other areas of the country, helping to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Source: neftegaz.ru

The Sakhalinenergo company became the first participant in the Sakhalin climate experiment, registering 684 units of greenhouse gas emission quotas.
