The facility will enable the country to process up to 5 billion cubic meters of raw natural gas annually directly at one of its largest oil and gas assets.

The project will become an integral part of the broader Karachaganak development complex. Its primary objective is to expand Kazakhstan’s domestic gas processing capacity and reduce dependence on external operators and infrastructure for gas treatment.

Kazakhstan had previously considered an alternative development scenario under which a consortium involving European energy majors Shell and Eni would construct the plant. However, the project operator never reached a final investment decision, and that approach was ultimately abandoned. The government has now opted for a solution based on South Korean technology and a clearly defined implementation schedule.

The scale of the project is significant. According to Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy, total investment will amount to at least $2.5 billion. Construction is expected to take between two and a half and four years. During this period, Hyundai Engineering will develop the entire technological chain required for receiving, treating, and preparing natural gas for transportation and further use.

The new gas processing plant addresses several strategic priorities simultaneously. First, Kazakhstan will gain direct control over the processing of valuable hydrocarbons produced at one of its largest fields. Second, the country will be able to increase exports of higher-value processed gas products rather than relying solely on raw gas production. Third, the project is expected to support related industries and create new employment opportunities in western Kazakhstan.

The selection of Hyundai Engineering marks a new stage in the development of the Karachaganak field. Kazakhstan is accelerating the expansion of its domestic gas processing industry while strengthening its position in global energy markets.

Source: @atamekenbusiness

Image: @atamekenbusiness

South Korean contractor Hyundai Engineering has officially received notification that it has won the tender to build a new gas processing plant at Kazakhstan’s Karachaganak field.
