The country’s Ministry of Energy and international energy company Shell have launched a joint initiative aimed at converting vast amounts of historical geological information into a modern digital format.

The parties have already signed the necessary agreements to begin the project. The pilot initiative centers on the creation of an advanced geoinformation system capable of processing, organizing, and interpreting geological data accumulated over decades. The information includes everything from paper reports and geological maps dating back to the Soviet era to fragmented digital records collected in more recent years.

The primary objective is to transform scattered archives into a practical tool for geologists, exploration companies, and investors. The new platform will enable faster and more accurate analysis of geological structures, improve the identification of prospective exploration targets, and reduce risks associated with mineral exploration projects.

Officials at the Ministry of Energy view the project as an important step toward gaining a clearer understanding of the country’s true resource potential. Well-organized and easily accessible data can significantly improve investment attractiveness. Instead of relying on broad estimates, potential partners will have access to digitized geological information that supports informed investment decisions and accelerates project evaluation.

For Shell, the initiative provides an opportunity to apply its global expertise in geoinformation technologies and digital transformation to Kazakhstan’s resource sector. The company has extensive experience implementing digital geological and exploration solutions in multiple countries around the world.

The partnership offers Kazakhstan more than just new technology. It provides a foundation for more efficient exploration and development of the country’s mineral resources. Once digitized, the data will serve as a cornerstone for a new generation of geological exploration projects and resource assessments.

Source: @atamekenbusiness

Image: Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is taking a major step toward improving transparency and accessibility of its subsurface resources.
