All three prize-winning places, RUB 2 million in prize money, and several grams of gold stayed in the hands of Kolyma residents, despite applications arriving from five countries.

The anniversary competition took place at Dukcha Ethnopark. Sixty participants, selected by lottery from 242 applicants, were given 15 minutes to recover as much placer gold as possible using traditional prospecting tools—a gold pan, a pickaxe, and a half-barrel filled with water.

The overall winner was Yana Isaeva from the settlement of Palatka, who recovered 3.49 grams of gold and claimed the RUB 1 million grand prize. Second place went to Yevgenia Gneusheva from Susuman, who collected exactly 3.00 grams and received RUB 700,000. Timur Kormushin of Magadan finished third with 2.89 grams, earning RUB 300,000.

The competition attracted participants from well beyond the Magadan Region. Applications were submitted from St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Yakutia, as well as from Belarus and Uzbekistan. Yet when the final results were announced, the podium once again belonged exclusively to local prospectors.

Held annually since 2015 as part of the Golden Festival, the event has become one of the region’s signature attractions. The rules have remained unchanged throughout its history: no mechanized equipment is allowed—only manual tools, water, skill, and a bit of luck, just as the competition’s name suggests.

The tenth anniversary edition once again demonstrated that fortune seems to favor those who know Kolyma best. Local prospectors left no chance for visitors from other Russian regions or abroad, reinforcing their reputation as some of the country’s most skilled traditional gold panners.

Source: magadanmedia.ru

Image: Ilya Belyaev

The tenth edition of Magadan’s Prospector’s Luck gold panning competition once again confirmed an unwritten rule: the home crowd always comes out on top.
