Kazakhstan’s gold mining industry is experiencing both a boom and a stress test at the same time. High global metal prices, the launch of new mining and processing plants, and an influx of foreign investors<\/a> coexist with a shortage of affordable capital and regulatory barriers. A new episode of the “By Weight of Gold”<\/a> podcast set out to examine the industry’s real state of affairs.<\/p>\n\n

Host Yana Akhmatova’s guest was Kanat Baitov, Executive Director of the Republican Association of Precious Metals Producers and chairman of the relevant subcommittee within the Atameken business association. The conversation covered key market players, prospects for domestic ore processing, and the connections between gold mining and other sectors of the economy.<\/p>\n\n

A separate topic was the impact of record gold prices on the industry. High prices open opportunities to develop small deposits that were previously unprofitable, but at the same time require technologies that can reduce costs. The discussion also touched on geographic prospects \u2014 which areas of Kazakhstan still hold undeveloped gold-bearing land.<\/p>\n\n

A large portion of the conversation was devoted to the interaction between the government and investors. Participants discussed financing issues and the role of the National Bank, changes to the Criminal Code and the fight against illegal mining, as well as work with banks to include dor\u00e9 bars on the list of highly liquid materials.<\/p>\n\n

Special attention was given to cooperation with Chinese companies<\/a>. Chinese capital is actively entering Kazakhstan’s gold mining sector, bringing investment and technology, but at the same time raising questions about balancing interests and long-term control over assets.<\/p>\n\n

Kazakhstan’s gold industry today needs not only new deposits but also clear rules of the game, accessible financing, and modern processing capacity. The industry is entering a new phase, and whether this stage becomes sustainable growth or another cycle of missed opportunities will depend on how relations develop between the government, investors, and technology partners.<\/p>\n\n
