Let&#8217;s look at the example of the largest market players to see who produces the most iron ore and why the world ranking has not changed over the years. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Top 5 leading countries in iron ore production<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024, global iron ore production exceeded <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/periodicals\/mcs2025\/mcs2025-iron-ore.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2.6 billion tons<\/a>, with the bulk coming from just a few countries in the world: Australia, Brazil, China, India and Russia.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main production volumes are concentrated in countries with the largest deposits and developed infrastructure. Although the Pilbara region in Western Australia and deposits in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais are primarily for export, it is not just geology that matters. The former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldports.org\/chinas-bulk-commodity-data-shows-divergence-steel-products-weak-iron-ore-resilient\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accounts for<\/a> about 55% of the world&#8217;s seaborne iron ore shipments, and the latter for another 24%. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>India<\/strong>, despite high mining volumes, uses <a href=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/en\/net-zero-without-illusions-why-green-energy-is-hindered-by-metal-scarcity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most of the raw material<\/a> domestically for its own steel production. <strong>China<\/strong> not only extracts the raw material itself, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/gmk.center\/en\/infographic\/global-iron-ore-exports-reached-1-6-billion-tons-in-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">imports<\/a> about 1.2 billion tons of ore per year and remains the largest buyer.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-midnight-gradient-background has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-543e74c39a53bd9c71369edbc31f48a2 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Magnetite, hematite, brown ironstones, siderite &#8211; <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/shorts\/vidy-zheleznoj-rudy-magnett-gematit-buriye-zheleznyaki-siderit-otlichiya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>read this article<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>Read this article to learn the differences between types of iron ore<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why some countries in the world produce more iron ore than others<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Huge proven reserves do not guarantee leadership. There are locations with iron ore in dozens of countries, such as Sweden, Canada or Kazakhstan, but the top positions are held by those where mining is economically profitable and developed. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scale and quality of stocks<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference starts with the characteristics of the deposits themselves in the countries. Iron ore reserves in Australia <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/periodicals\/mcs2025\/mcs2025-iron-ore.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are estimated<\/a> at about 50 billion tons, in Brazil at about 34 billion tons. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only the volume, but also the iron content is important. In Brazil, ore with a 65% Fe content is widespread, <a href=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/en\/without-geology-there-is-no-technological-future-who-and-how-will-provide-the-world-with-metals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for<\/a> example in the Carajas region. In many other countries with iron ore, such as China, this figure is often below <a href=\"https:\/\/dprom.online\/popular\/dobycha-zheleznoj-rudy-v-mire-i-v-rossii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">35%<\/a>, so the raw material has to be further beneficiated. This increases costs and reduces the competitiveness of mining.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-midnight-gradient-background has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-a2d687f13fd3ee176f4a01829091468e wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>How the junior segment was born, which took over the early stage of exploration &#8211; the <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/en\/juniors-in-exploration-startups-that-the-industry-has-not-yet-learned-how-to-grow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>read the article<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Logistics and market access<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iron ore-rich countries are limited in their production unless they have convenient access to consumers. Australia supplies raw materials through several major ports, including Port Hedland, the largest hub, through which more than 500 million tons per year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhp.com\/what-we-do\/global-locations\/australia\/western-australia\/port-hedland-ports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pass<\/a>.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Investments and extraction technologies<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not just the availability of ore that affects <a href=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/geomethods-1000m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">production volumes<\/a>, but also how it is mined. The leading countries have large companies &#8211; BHP, Rio Tinto and Vale &#8211; that are investing in automation and large-scale open pits. Rio Tinto, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riotinto.com\/en\/news\/releases\/2018\/world-first-autonomous-trains-deployed#:~:text=The%20%24940%20million%20AutoHaul%E2%84%A2,to%20the%20highest%20safety%20standards.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uses<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn-rio.dataweavers.io\/-\/media\/content\/images\/operations\/pilbara\/rt-pilbara-b-roll.mp4?rev=f1b7ed586adf46a9a9358096c6538fb4\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cdn-rio.dataweavers.io\/-\/media\/content\/images\/operations\/pilbara\/rt-pilbara-b-roll.mp4?rev=f1b7ed586adf46a9a9358096c6538fb4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autonomous AutoHaul trains<\/a> to reduce ore transportation costs.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These technologies have a direct impact on the cost of production. For the largest producers in Australia, it remains one of the lowest in the world. For example, Rio Tinto&#8217;s operating costs for iron ore mining in the Pilbara region are projected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/rio-tintos-annual-profit-flat-copper-strength-offsets-weaker-iron-ore-2026-02-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to<\/a> be $23.5-25 per ton in 2026. While Australia and Brazil export a significant portion of their raw materials, Russian production is mainly oriented towards the domestic market. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Rosnedra, the country&#8217;s balance reserves of iron ores <a href=\"https:\/\/nedradv.ru\/nedradv\/ru\/resources?obj=ab05b068239ede80d3dd35cf40488eca&amp;utm_source\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amount to<\/a> about 118.4 billion tons. Among the largest deposits is the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly. Only in the category of explored reserves there are about 32 billion tons. The Lebedinskoye and Mikhailovskoye deposits are located here, which are developed by open-pit mining and provide raw materials for large metallurgical enterprises.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A significant portion of ore is processed domestically. Russian steel mills, such as NLMK, MMK and Severstal, produce about <a href=\"https:\/\/delprof.ru\/press-center\/open-analytics\/metallurgicheskaya-otrasl-v-rossii-krupnejshie-proizvoditeli-stali\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">70 million tons of steel<\/a> per year, while iron ore exports to the world are relatively small. For example, according to Russian Railways, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rusmet.ru\/press-center\/rzhd-eksportnye-postavki-zheleznoy-rudy-vyrosli-na-13-3-v-pervom-kvartale-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3.7 million tons of ore<\/a> were exported in the first quarter of 2025.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will the iron ore market change<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until 2030, iron ore <a href=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/ai-nahodit-mestorozhdeniya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">production<\/a> will grow moderately in the leading countries due to the expansion of existing open-pit mines &#8211; more so, and less so, due to the emergence of new players.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Australia, major companies are launching new areas within existing ore provinces. For example, Rio Tinto is developing the Gudai-Darri project in the Pilbara region &#8211; its capacity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riotinto.com\/en\/operations\/anz\/western-australia\/gudai-darri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is<\/a> 43 million tons per year. BHP, in turn, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhp.com\/what-we-do\/global-locations\/australia\/western-australia\/south-flank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">implementing the<\/a> South Flank project, which has reached its design capacity of about 80 million tons per year.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Brazil, the main growth is due to the recovery and expansion of production after the constraints of previous years. Vale <a href=\"https:\/\/ejatlas.org\/print\/vales-giant-s11d-iron-ore-project-in-carajas-para-brazil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is ramping up<\/a> production at the S11D deposit (Caraj\u00e1s), which already produces about 90 million tons of ore per year. In parallel, a major new project, Simandou in Guinea, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rusmet.ru\/press-center\/pervye-shagi-k-realizatsii-proekta-razvitie-mestorozhdeniya-simandou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entering<\/a> the market.
