If South Africa or Russia came to mind first, you are not alone, because the majority think so. And he is wrong. South Africa has been called the golden heart of the planet for decades, and we read news about Russian deposits almost every day, which is why both answers seem so obvious.

Let’s figure out what the ranking looks like today and why the gold mining country has held first place for almost twenty years. We rely on figures from official reports of the USGS and the World Gold Council, and check with the magazine “Gold and Technologies” and its editor-in-chief Mikhail Leskov.

How do they calculate gold production in the world by country?

Let’s immediately clarify something important: there is no single way to calculate precious metal production in the world. Its quantity is measured in tons, but two organizations count it – the USGS and the World Gold Council – and their numbers are different. According to USGS, global gold production in 2025 was about 3,300 tons. World Gold Council (WGC) counted 3672 tons and called it record over the entire history of observations.

The difference of more than 300 tons arises due to the calculation method:

The USGS is more cautious and relies on verified statistics from mining companies;

The WGC adds figures for artisanal and associated mining, something that is difficult to account for directly in official statistics.

In any case, this does not affect the world ranking. In both sources, the rankings of countries in gold production are distributed equally, so further we rely on the USGS table – it’s easier to check.

Top 10 gold producing countries in 2025

And now to the main thing – the rating itself. Here’s how they were distributed leading countries in gold production.

Place

Country

Production, t

1

China

380

2

Russia

310

3

Australia

280

4

Canada

200

5

USA

160

6

Ghana

150

7

Mexico

140

8

Kazakhstan

130

9

Uzbekistan

130

10

Peru

110

Top 10 countries for gold production, 2025. Moreover holds it has been in first place since 2007, and during this time production in the country has never didn’t go down below 300 tons per year. Another thing is surprising: China does not have a single giant mine that would carry the entire volume. He is the leader became Thanks to the many medium-sized deposits and strong government support, mining is mainly carried out by state-owned companies such as Zijin Mining.

Here’s what really changes the picture in your head: the top 5 gold producing countries – China, Russia, Australia, Canada and the USA – together give only 41% of global production. The remaining almost 60% are scattered across dozens of countries. This is the peculiarity of the industry. Unlike oil, gold is mined almost everywhere – the metal is distributed much more evenly across the planet, so there is no hegemonic country here that could single-handedly dictate the price by production volumes.

Gold mining in Africa by country: a quiet revolution

It is worth taking a separate look at gold mining in Africa by country. Today the continent gives about a quarter of all the gold in the world, but in recent years there has been a revolution.

For many years, South Africa was the face of African gold, and now it bypassed Ghana – approximately 150 tons versus 90 for South Africa. Next come Mali and Burkina Faso. This happened because South Africa’s geology failed: its mines are the deepest on the planet, and go four kilometers down. The deeper the slaughter, the more expensive, slower and more dangerous each ton gets. Ghana took a different path and increased volumes through new projects, such as Newmont’s Ahafo North mine, which recently came online.

Thus, the places of countries in gold mining are determined not by the famous past, but by the modern economics of the deposits. A once gold-rich country can easily fall out of the top spot if digging becomes too expensive.

Read about the situation in the industry in the article “What’s wrong with gold mining in Russia: results and key trends»

Where is Russia?

Russia confidently holds second place in the world among the largest gold mining countries. Year after year, gold miners have consistently issue more than 300 tons. According to reserves in the subsoil of Russia second result on the planet, only Australia is ahead.

Still, behind the round number “310 tons” there is a not so smooth picture. The production is increasingly concentrated on a few large players. The undisputed leader “Polyus” alone gives about 79 tons. True, in 2025 even he slowed down: production decreased by 16% year on year – the planned transition to new lines of quarries at key deposits had an impact.

In general, a negative trend has formed in the Russian market: a wave of mergers and acquisitions is underway, the industry is strangled by a personnel shortage, and small prospectors are finding it increasingly difficult to stay afloat.

“The launch of new projects takes years, so the industry always responds to demand late,” explains Mikhail Leskov.

Geological exploration in Sukhoi Log (Irkutsk region). This deposit was discovered back in 1961, but production has not yet begun. A clear illustration of why the rating changes so slowly: decades pass from discovery to the first ton. Once launched, Sukhoi Log can make Russia a world leader. Photo: PJSC Polyus

Why the ranking of 10 countries for gold production remains almost unchanged

The top three gold mining countries “China – Russia – Australia” have been in the top for years, and this is due to the very nature of the industry.

For 2025 precious metal updated price record 53 times, and the average price for the first time exceeded $3,300 per ounce. It would seem that with such figures, production should shoot up, but no. For the last ten years she adds on average less than 1% per year. Analysts at the World Gold Council say so directly – the industry is reaching a plateau. New large deposits are becoming increasingly difficult to discover. From discovery to the first ton produced passes 10–15 years.

The phrase “production plateau” does not mean that gold is running out. There is still a lot of metal in the depths, it’s just getting more and more expensive and slower, which is why the top countries in gold mining are changing so slowly. To promote a leader, a newcomer needs only a desire; he needs a decade of work and successful geological exploration.

More on the topic:
Methods of gold mining: how the metal is extracted from the ground
Alluvial mining impasse: why the industry is losing miners

Have you thought who is the leader in gold mining?
