Source: \u200b\u200bHeather Jacquard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is this market and why is it special?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rare earth metals (REM) are a group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tadviser.ru\/index.php\/%D0%A1%D1%82%D0%B0%D1%82%D1%8C%D1%8F:%D0%A0%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%B7%D0%B5%D0%BC%D0%B5%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B5_%D0%BC%D0%B5%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%BB%D0%BB%D1%8B\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">17<\/a> elements without which they do not work <a href=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/metally-v-tvoem-smartfone\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">smartphones<\/a>, MRI scanners, electric motors. Geologically, they are not rare: for example, cerium and lanthanum are found in the earth&#8217;s crust more often than copper or lead. The problem is different &#8211; REMs do not form rich ore bodies. Their concentrations are low, and the elements themselves are \u201cspread\u201d throughout the rock, so companies mining rare earths introduce complex and expensive technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key feature of the rare earth metals market is its dependence not on reserves, but on processing. In 2023 approx. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/visualizing-global-rare-earth-metals-production-1995-2023\/?\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">70%<\/a> world <a href=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/news\/redkozemelnye-metally-samarskaya-oblast-pererabotka-elektronnogo-loma\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rare earth metal mining<\/a> accounted for China, another 12% &#8211; in the USA. At the stage of chemical separation, the imbalance becomes much more severe: more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/greatspeculations\/2025\/10\/27\/the-west-fights-back-in-the-rare-earth-wars\/?\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">85\u201390% <\/a>capacities for purification and isolation of individual elements are concentrated in China. It is there that the ore is transformed into neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium &#8211; the basis of magnets, electronics and defense systems.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This stage is the most difficult and \u201cdirty\u201d in the chain. The separation of rare earths includes dozens of stages of acid leaching and extraction, which is accompanied by the formation of toxic waste and radioactive impurities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 1990s\u20132000s, rare earth metals mining companies in the United States and Europe <a href=\"https:\/\/discoveryalert.com.au\/european-rare-earth-vulnerability-2025-dependency\/?\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closed<\/a> such productions for two reasons:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>tightening environmental standards have made recycling economically unprofitable;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Chinese companies were able to offer cheaper products due to volumes and government support.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, the rare earth market has become one of the most concentrated commodity markets in the world: mining is distributed, processing is not. Chinese corporations, primarily China Minmetals, control the most difficult stage &#8211; the chemical separation of ore into individual elements. It is there that it is decided which metals and in what volumes will enter the world market.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">US and Australian rare earth mining companies MP Materials, Lynas, Energy Fuels, Iluka, Arafura and USA Rare Earth play a different role. Refining volumes will increase as new capacities outside China, Europe and North America enter the market. Investors and governments are creating local supply chains so as not to depend on China. Thus, American Energy Fuels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7c389aef-80e2-4696-bbc1-e24561289b74?\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">buys<\/a> ASM Strategic Materials to build an integrated chain, and in Australia and Europe they are actively investing in the processing and deep separation of rare earths.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What <a href=\"https:\/\/dprom.online\/metallurgy\/analeez-zarubyezhnih-proyektov-po-rzm\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concerns<\/a> Russia, its position in the history of rare earths is a separate story. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, <a href=\"https:\/\/murmansk.rbc.ru\/murmansk\/18\/06\/2025\/685277ff9a79478e1a80af3e?\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">28,5<\/a> million tons of rare earths &#8211; fifth place in the world after China, Brazil, India, and Australia. Of the total volume only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/what-are-russias-rare-earth-metals-ambitions-2025-02-26\/?\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3,8<\/a> million tons are in development or ready for it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main producer of rare earth metals in Russia is the Solikamsk Magnesium Plant (Rosatom) at <a href=\"https:\/\/geoconversation.org\/news\/vosstanovlenie-shahty-lovozerskij-gok-redkozemelnye-metally\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lovoozersk fields<\/a> in the Murmansk region.
