Gazprom successfully implemented the first major phase contract with China, supplying 100 billion cubic meters of gas via the Power of Siberia trunk gas pipeline (MGP). The head of the company, Alexey Miller, emphasized that this is only the beginning of a long-term cooperation, calculated until 2049.
The agreement between Gazprom and the Chinese CNPC, signed in 2014, provides for the supply of 38 billion m³ of gas annually for 30 years. However, since 2020 the company has been consistently exceeding its contractual obligations:
- In 2021, 10.39 billion m³ were supplied (+390 million m³ above the plan).
- In 2022, the volume increased to 15.4 billion m³.
- In 2023, China received 22.7 billion m³, which is 3% more than planned.
In December 2024, daily supplies reached their maximum, and the annual volume exceeded 31 billion m³. This covered about 25% of China’s additional gas demand.
In addition to the Power of Siberia, the parties are developing other projects:
1. Far Eastern route (formerly “Power of Siberia-3”):
- The contract for 10 billion m³ per year was signed in 2022.
- Deliveries will begin in January 2027 through a branch from the Sakhalin – Khabarovsk – Vladivostok gas pipeline.
2. Western route (“Power of Siberia-2”):
- Capacity – up to 50 billion m³ per year.
- The timing of implementation depends on negotiations; the main infrastructure in Russia may be ready by 2030–2032.
In April 2025, Gazprom for the first time carried out planned work at the Power of Siberia without stopping supplies, which confirmed the reliability of the infrastructure.
The partnership between Russia and China in the gas sector is showing steady growth. With the introduction of new routes, supplies could exceed 100 billion m³ per year, strengthening the energy security of the two countries.
