Kuwait Oil Company announced the discovery of large oil and gas reserves in the Al-Jlaiaa field in the Persian Gulf. According to preliminary data, hydrocarbon reserves are estimated at 800 million barrels of oil and 600 billion cubic feet of associated gas.
The press service of Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) announced the successful exploration of new hydrocarbon reserves in the Al-Jlaiaa field, located on the shelf of the Persian Gulf. Testing of the Jlaiaa 2 exploration well showed encouraging results, confirming the significant potential of the deposits.
According to the company, the field’s reserves include 800 million barrels of medium-gravity, low-sulfur oil and 600 billion cubic feet of associated petroleum gas. This translates to about 950 million barrels of oil equivalent. The discovery took place in the Zubair geological formation, which dates back to the Cretaceous period.
The area of the site, according to preliminary data, is 74 square kilometers. At the next stage of geological exploration work (GRR), it is planned to conduct 3D seismic surveys over an area of more than 6 thousand square kilometers. This work is aimed at more accurately assessing reserves and developing a production strategy.
The Al-Jlaiaa field marks KOC’s second major discovery in its ongoing exploration program. Earlier, in July 2024, the company announced the discovery of the Al-Nokhaza offshore field. Another significant discovery was the Al-Nukhida field, where hydrocarbon reserves in the Manageesh reservoir are estimated at 3.2 billion barrels of oil equivalent, including 2.1 billion barrels of oil and 5.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
Kuwait remains one of the leading OPEC countries, ranking fifth in terms of oil production. The country currently produces about 2.48 million barrels of oil per day, and plans to increase this figure to 4 million barrels per day by 2035. Historically, the first commercial well in Kuwait was drilled in 1938 at the Al-Burqan field, and oil exports began in 1946.
The discovery of new reserves at the Al-Jlaiaa field confirms Kuwait’s rich resource potential. These achievements not only strengthen the country’s position in the global oil market, but also demonstrate the capabilities of modern technologies in the exploration and production of hydrocarbons.
