Scientists at Perm Polytechnic University have developed a new technology for the production of methyl ethyl ketone, a key solvent for oil refining. This will reduce dependence on imports and reduce costs for the production of oils, varnishes, paints and other products.

Refined oils from petroleum are used in everything from motor lubricants to cosmetics and paints. For their production, methyl ethyl ketone is used, a solvent that improves the quality of oils and accelerates their drying. The problem is that it is not produced in Russia, and purchasing it abroad is expensive due to logistics and prices.

Researchers at Perm Polytechnic University have proposed their own method for synthesizing methyl ethyl ketone. The technology includes two stages: first, benzene and 2-butanol are combined with a catalyst, then the resulting substance is oxidized with air. As a result, two useful products are formed at once – methyl ethyl ketone and phenol, which is also used in oil purification.

The key advantage of the method is the use of chemically pure 2-butanol, which reduces the risk of adverse reactions. Foreign analogues work with less stable compounds, which deteriorates the quality of the final product.

According to scientists, the cost of the solvent will be no more than 250,000 rubles per ton, which is cheaper than imported analogues. The main consumers will be oil refineries and paint and varnish enterprises.

The development will not only reduce oil refining costs, but will also ensure stable supplies of solvent for Russian factories. The scientists’ plans are to patent the technology, attract investment and create a pilot plant for industrial production.
