Scientists from St. Petersburg State University discovered a rare mineral in Norilsk ore, which was previously found only in meteorites. The find was named olgafrankite in honor of geologist Olga Frank-Kamenetskaya and can reveal new secrets of the Earth and space.
Researchers from St. Petersburg State University made a sensational discovery after studying rock samples from Norilsk. These samples were kept in the collection of the Institute of Geology of Diamond and Precious Metals of the SB RAS for almost 40 years. Using modern methods, including electron microscopy, scientists identified a mineral consisting of nickel and germanium in them.
Until now, olgafrankite has only been found in stony meteorites. Its formation requires special conditions – the absence of oxygen, which is extremely rare on Earth. Therefore, the discovery of the mineral in the Norilsk deposits came as a surprise to the scientific community.
According to Sergei Erykalov, a representative of Norilsk Nickel, the study of ores in this region has been going on for decades, and new technologies make it possible to make unique discoveries. The diversity of the composition of Norilsk rocks gives hope for further discoveries.
The discovery of olgafrancite will help scientists better understand the processes of formation of the earth’s core and space objects. Norilsk once again confirmed its status as one of the most geologically interesting places on the planet.
