Canada Launches Digital Platform to Accelerate Permitting for Mines and Pipelines

The Canadian government is betting on transparency and open data to streamline the approval process for major resource and infrastructure projects. A new online platform now allows mining companies, regulators, Indigenous communities, and the public to access the same comprehensive information about proposed mines, pipelines, and other large-scale developments.

The new tool, called the Open Science and Data Platform, was developed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). It brings together geospatial datasets, environmental monitoring results, interactive mapping tools, and regulatory information from federal, provincial, and territorial authorities into a single portal.

The platform directly supports the work of Canada’s Major Projects Office, established in 2025 to accelerate nationally significant projects while maintaining environmental standards and honoring commitments to Indigenous reconciliation.

According to Sonya Koshuta, Senior Director at Natural Resources Canada, a single source of trusted scientific, environmental, and regulatory information enables both project developers and regulators to complete impact assessments more efficiently while improving transparency for Canadians. She described the platform as a strong example of digital modernization in environmental regulation.

One featured example is Newmont’s Red Chris mine expansion in British Columbia’s Golden Triangle. The portal provides curated information ranging from Indigenous treaty boundaries and protected species to existing infrastructure, power transmission lines, watersheds, and nearby projects. Users can overlay multiple datasets on interactive maps, download information for further analysis, or connect directly to original data sources that are updated automatically through application programming interfaces (APIs) rather than static uploads.

For mining companies—particularly junior explorers operating with limited budgets—the platform significantly reduces the time and cost required during the early planning stages. Instead of commissioning studies simply to locate government-held information, developers can access those datasets through a single portal before submitting permit applications. As Koshuta noted, this eliminates duplicated work and unnecessary expenses while accelerating the assessment process.

Colter Kelly, Senior Impact Assessment Specialist, added that the platform enables users to build a detailed picture of a project area within minutes by combining information from numerous government databases. Roads, vegetation cover, Indigenous communities, environmental monitoring stations, and other datasets can be layered together or exported for additional analysis.

Unlike conventional databases that rely on static copies of information, the platform remains connected to its data providers through automated data feeds. Updates made by federal or provincial agencies are reflected on the portal almost immediately.

The platform will continue to expand. Future plans include integrating trusted non-governmental data sources, incorporating artificial intelligence to improve search functionality and metadata tagging, and converting historical assessment records into machine-readable formats. Any Indigenous-owned data incorporated into the system will be managed in accordance with principles of Indigenous data sovereignty and governance.

According to Natural Resources Canada, the portal already serves approximately 200,000 unique users, with around 70% returning for repeat visits. The growing level of public engagement suggests that the platform is becoming an increasingly valuable resource for governments, mining companies, researchers, and communities seeking reliable information about major Canadian projects.

Canada has chosen digital transformation to address one of the most complex aspects of resource development—project permitting. By creating a single access point for scientific, environmental, and regulatory data, the country aims not only to accelerate approvals but also to make the entire process more transparent for investors, Indigenous communities, regulators, and the public alike.
