Perm Polytechnic specialists have developed a new method for determining the angle of friction between soil and geosynthetic materials. The technology is simple, accessible and requires fewer resources than existing analogues.
To increase the stability of building structures, such as foundations and road embankments, reinforced soil systems are widely used. They consist of layers of soil and reinforcing materials, such as geotextiles. However, the design of such structures requires an accurate calculation of the interaction between the soil and the reinforcing elements.
Until recently, only one method for such calculations was used in Russia. It was expensive and required special equipment, which often had to be purchased abroad. Scientists at Perm Polytechnic University have proposed a more affordable method, which has already received a patent.
The new technology is based on the use of a triaxial compression device, available in many laboratories. During testing, a soil sample with reinforcing layers is subjected to load. The radial deformation sensor records the moment of loss of adhesion between the soil and the geosynthetic material. This allows you to determine the friction angle – a key parameter for calculating the strength of the structure.
“Our method allows us to evaluate the interaction of soil and reinforcing elements with minimal cost. This is especially important for the construction of roads, foundations and other objects where reinforced soil technologies are used,” explains Maxim Kazakov, graduate student of the Department of Construction Production and Geotechnics at PNIPU.
The development of Perm scientists not only simplifies the calculation process, but also makes it more accessible to Russian construction companies. This opens up new opportunities for the use of reinforced soil structures in various branches of construction.
