Phytoremediation of sludge pits: scientists have found a way to restore ecosystems after oil production

Scientists at Perm Polytechnic University have developed a phytoremediation method for restoring ecosystems on the site of sludge pits – storage areas for oil production waste. The technology is based on the use of plants that can absorb pollutants from the soil. 

The development of oil and gas fields causes significant damage to the environment. One of the most serious problems is mud pits where drilling waste is stored. These wastes contain high concentrations of salts, which leads to salinization of soil and water resources, destroying vegetation and disrupting the ecological balance. 

Scientists from Perm Polytechnic University have proposed a solution – the phytoremediation method. This approach relies on the use of plants that can absorb pollutants from the soil. During the research, experts conducted experiments with watercress and oats to determine which crops are most resistant to the toxic effects of drill cuttings. 

The results showed that oats showed high resistance to pollution, while watercress was unable to germinate under highly toxic conditions. This makes cereal crops promising for use in phytoremediation. 

Chemical analysis of the sludge revealed a high content of calcium and magnesium, which can be beneficial for plants with additional nitrogen and phosphorus. However, high concentrations of chlorides slow down the biological activity of the soil and disrupt plant photosynthesis. 

Scientists continue research to select the optimal combination of plants, including herbs, shrubs and trees, to create a sustainable phytocenosis. This will allow the disturbed lands to be returned to natural circulation and reduce the environmental load from oil production.
