Smart pumps for oil production: development by Perm Polytechnic University will reduce equipment wear

Scientists from Perm Polytechnic University presented an innovative control system for sucker rod pumps for oil production. The technology adapts the operation of equipment in real time, preventing breakdowns and reducing energy consumption.

Rod pumping units are key equipment in the oil industry. However, their operation at a constant speed leads to overloads, vibrations and premature wear of parts. This increases repair and energy costs and reduces production efficiency.

Perm Polytechnic specialists have developed a “smart” system that dynamically regulates the pump speed. It uses a digital model (twin) of the installation, analyzes engine parameters and automatically optimizes operation, reducing the load on equipment.

“Our technology allows you to change the pump speed in each cycle, minimizing peak loads,” explains Evgeniy Solodkiy, associate professor at PNRPU. – Tests have shown that this reduces energy consumption by 15-20% and extends the life of the pumps.

Unlike existing systems that respond to problems that have already arisen, the development of Perm scientists prevents overloads in advance. This makes oil production more stable and economical.

So far the system has been successfully tested in a virtual environment. The next step is testing in real conditions. The introduction of technology will allow oil producing companies to reduce costs and avoid downtime due to breakdowns.

The innovation of Perm Polytechnic University is an important step towards sustainable oil production. Smart pumps will improve equipment reliability and reduce costs, which is critical for the industry.
