The fourth stage of industrial development of the gas giant Galkynysh has officially started in Mary velayat. Ahead is the construction of a gas treatment plant with a capacity of 10 billion cubic meters commercial gas per year. The cost of the work is estimated at approximately $5.1 billion. The republican authorities emphasized that they will fully finance the project. Already in April, the active phase of drilling and construction began.
After completion of this stage, total supplies of Turkmen gas to China are planned to increase from the current 40 billion cubic meters per year to 65 billion. New volumes will form the basis for filling the future fourth branch (line D) of the Turkmenistan-China transcontinental gas pipeline. A total of seven stages of field development are planned. When they are fully implemented, total production at Galkynysh will reach 200 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
Galkynysh is the second largest gas field in the world and the largest on land. It was opened in 2007 and is located in the southeast of Turkmenistan, close to Iran and Afghanistan. According to the latest independent estimates from GaffneyCline, the total reserves of Galkynysh, together with adjacent structures, amount to 27.4 trillion cubic meters of gas.
For Turkmenistan, the development of Galkynysh is not just an increase in production, but a strategic step towards strengthening its position in the global energy market. Increasing exports to China through new gas pipeline branch will allow diversification of supply routes and increase the energy security of the region.
