An associate professor at Perm Polytechnic University proposed using struvite to eliminate the consequences of a fuel oil spill in Anapa. This method not only cleanses the soil, but also restores its fertility, which is especially important for the resort region.

The environmental disaster caused by the oil spill in Anapa in December 2024 caused serious damage to the coastal zone. Despite the collection of the bulk of the pollution, residual traces of fuel oil continue to harm ecosystem. A solution to the problem was proposed by Alexey Starostin, a candidate of technical sciences from Perm Polytechnic University. Its development based on struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate) has already been patented and proven to be effective.

Struvite acts as a natural sorbent, binding oil residues and turning them into solid formations that are easy to collect from the soil surface. At the same time, the mineral enriches the soil with useful elements – magnesium, ammonium and phosphates, accelerating the restoration of vegetation.

Advantages of the method:

  • Cleans up to 90% of dirt in a few weeks.
  • Reduces the cost of soil restoration by 30-40% compared to traditional methods.
  • Allows you to restore fertility to the earth in just 2-3 months.

The peculiarity of the technology is its double action: it not only neutralizes harmful substances, but also stimulates plant growth. In tests, the yield of radishes in the treated areas increased by 2.5-3.7 times, and of spinach by 30-50%.

The method is already ready for use on an area of up to 5 hectares during one season. The scientist applied for grant for further research that will allow scaling the technology to other regions.

The new development of the Perm Polytechnic University offers not only an effective, but also an economical solution for the restoration of contaminated areas. This is an important step in preserving the ecology of resort areas.
