According to the Ministry of Energy, losses in the coal industry for the first quarter of 2025 could reach 70 billion rubles. This is almost twice as much as for the same period last year, when losses amounted to 43 billion rubles.
Deputy Energy Minister Dmitry Islamov noted that negative factors continue influence on the industry. The main reasons include declining demand for coal, rising production and logistics costs, and tightening environmental regulations.
Despite the implementation of anti-crisis programs, many enterprises remain unprofitable. According to Rosstat statistics, in 2024 the share of profitable companies decreased to 46.7% compared to 68.5% in 2023. The total loss of the industry last year amounted to 112.6 billion rubles, and in 2025 an increase to 250 billion is predicted.
The government is preparing a package of measures to stabilize the situation. Among the possible options:
- Discounts on rail transportation of coal;
- Export quotas from key regions;
- Programs for restructuring and reorganization of enterprises.
Experts emphasize that without government assistance, many mines and open-pit mines may stop, which will lead to the loss of thousands jobs.
Analysts believe that the coal industry needs deep modernization and diversification. Switching to more environmentally friendly technologies and searching for new markets will help reduce losses. However, in the short term the situation will remain difficult.
