Kyrgyzstan has begun construction of a major coal logistics complex in the Osh Region aimed at supporting solid fuel exports to China. The project is fully financed by Chinese investors, with total investment estimated at $430 million.
The new complex is being developed to transport coal from the Tekelik deposit. The fuel will be delivered to the Irkeshtam border checkpoint on the frontier with China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The primary goal is to increase transportation capacity to 10 million tonnes of coal per year.
Construction will be carried out in several phases. The first stage is valued at $50 million and includes the construction of a 7.7-kilometre conveyor system. In later stages, the conveyor line will be expanded to 157 kilometres. The complex will also include two coal processing plants.
Project partners include the state-owned company Kyrgyzkomur, the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan, and the Chinese company Xinjiang Dacheng Yuanlong Technology. For the republic, the project represents an important step in developing the coal industry, increasing export capacity, and attracting foreign investment. China, in turn, gains an additional coal supply channel from a neighbouring country.
The joint initiative is expected to strengthen economic ties between the two countries and provide momentum for transport infrastructure development in southern Kyrgyzstan.
