Researchers from PNRPU and the Mining Institute of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have developed an effective mine ventilation model that will help improve air quality in dead-end mine workings. They determined exactly how the ventilation duct should be positioned to achieve the best results.

Scientists from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNIPU) and the Mining Institute of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences conducted a study that helped determine exactly how to correctly place the ventilation pipeline in mines for effective ventilation. According to experts, air parameters in dead-end mine workings directly depend on where exactly the pipeline is installed. This discovery could significantly improve working conditions in mines and provide a safe environment for miners.

Currently, in mines, a pressure ventilation scheme is most often used, in which fresh air is supplied through a pipeline laid along the entire dead-end working. However, when the air stream collides with a stone wall, turbulent eddies are created, which can impair air circulation and lead to insufficient ventilation, which is especially important for removing harmful gases and maintaining normal working conditions.

To identify the optimal location of the ventilation pipeline, scientists created a three-dimensional model of a mine opening with dimensions of 28 square meters. m and a length of 100 m. In this model, air entered through a ventilation system, and various options for its design were analyzed. The study showed that ventilation efficiency increases significantly when the air stream passes along the walls of the excavation and does not turn around too early, providing more effective removal of toxic substances from the work area.

After a detailed analysis of several pipeline layouts, scientists came to the conclusion that the best result is achieved when the ventilation pipeline is located in the lower corner of the mine, and its end is 15-30 meters from the face. In this case, the air flow has more room to turn, which contributes to better distribution of fresh air throughout the entire production. Installing the pipeline in the center, under the roof, showed less efficiency, which was also recorded during the study.

The results of this study open new possibilities for improving ventilation in mines, providing safer working conditions. Placing ventilation pipelines according to the optimal layout will improve the quality of air exchange, reducing the concentration of harmful gases and improving working conditions for miners.
