Russian companies are actively developing lithium deposits in Argentina
More than 70 joint projects for the extraction of mineral resources, including lithium, are planned to be implemented by Russian companies in Argentina. Now the initiatives are at the initial stage, reports Izvestia, citing the Ambassador of Argentina to Russia Enrique Ignacio Ferrer Vieira.
Representative offices of Russian companies already operate in the Argentine provinces of Jujuy, Salta, Catamarca and San Juan. The main focus is on lithium, but other minerals such as gold, copper and silver.
As the Argentine Embassy noted, cooperation is carried out at the level of private companies, without the participation of government agencies. Most of the projects have been launched recently, and subsoil users are now in the process of obtaining environmental and social permits.
Argentina is part of the so-called “lithium triangle” along with Bolivia and Chile, which account for more than half of the world’s reserves of this metal. The country has significant resources, which makes it attractive to foreign investors.
Previously, Russian companies have already begun to develop lithium deposits in Bolivia. The joint project of Rosatom and the state-owned company YLB planned to produce 14 thousand tons of lithium carbonate per year, but its implementation has so far been delayed due to bureaucratic procedures.
Russian business is actively investing in lithium mining in South America. Despite the lack of government support, private companies see great potential in Argentine fields. The success of these projects could strengthen Russia’s position in the global lithium market.
