Large Russian companies Rusnano and Norilsk Nickel are joining forces to launch large-scale production of sodium-ion batteries. This step should create a domestic alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries and strengthen the country’s technological independence in the battery industry.

Russian giants Rusnano and Norilsk Nickel are starting a joint project to produce sodium-ion batteries. The initiative was announced by the head of Rusnano Sergei Kulikov at a meeting with President Vladimir Putin. The new development is positioned as a national alternative to lithium-ion solutions.

The key advantage of the new batteries is their high efficiency in difficult climatic conditions. They demonstrate increased frost resistance and resistance to temperature changes, which is critical for operation in Russia. In addition, these batteries are easy to use and fast charging.

Another significant factor is economic. Sodium-ion technologies are significantly cheaper because they do not use scarce lithium. Available lithium reserves in Russia are limited, which makes the development of domestic production of sodium batteries a strategically important step.

Sergei Kulikov said that mass production of sodium-ion batteries, including for electric vehicles, is planned for 2026. The technology has already been certified by the Chinese company CATL, one of the world leaders in this field. It is noteworthy that not so long ago CATL lost its license to mine lithium at one of the world’s largest deposits.

In parallel, Rusnano and Norilsk Nickel are working on another important project – the construction of a plant for processing industrial waste and extracting valuable components from them. For this purpose, a number of Soviet technologies have already been successfully tested and have shown positive results.

The launch of the production of sodium-ion batteries opens up new prospects for Russia in the energy and transport sectors. This project will not only reduce dependence on imported technologies, but will also offer consumers affordable and reliable solutions adapted to the harsh conditions of the country.
