A subsidiary of Rosgeo conducts coal exploration in the Tomponsky region of Yakutia. The work is being carried out within the framework of the federal project “Geology: Revival of a Legend.” Specialists of JSC “Yakutskgeology” evaluate reserves between the Tyra and Khandyga rivers. The site is located in the eastern part of the Lena coal basin and is adjacent to the Dzhebariki-Khaya deposit, which has been developed for 80 years.
Geologists are tasked with finding areas suitable for open-pit mining. The target is 55 million tons of grade D coal. This is a long-flame coal valued for its high heat output: from 5,000 to 6,200 kilocalories per kilogram. It has low ash and low sulfur content, and burns well without forced air supply. This coal is ideal for household stoves and municipal services.
The main focus is on the D40 formation. Its area is 27.44 square kilometers. If the power is sufficient, this formation will become main mining target. The second object is the D22 formation with an area of 11 square kilometers, but it occurs fragmentarily and can pinch out. The rocks will be studied to a depth of 100 meters from the surface.
The field stage of work was completed in 2025. Now specialists process materials in laboratory conditions and conduct laboratory tests. The results will help adjust drilling plans for the spring-summer season of 2026.
The assessment work is planned to be completed in 2027. Based on the results, geologists will make recommendations on whether exploration is worth continuing and how cost-effective development can be.
This is an important project for Yakutia. Grade D coal is in demand in the region, and additional reserves will help provide local boiler houses and the residential sector with high-quality fuel. In addition, open-pit mining is cheaper and safer than underground mining, if geological conditions allow.
