St. Petersburg Mining University announced the launch of a new educational course on 3D modeling. The program is aimed at developing students’ professional skills in the field of engineering modeling and the use of domestic software. The new course will help students become competitive specialists in engineering and technical disciplines.

St. Petersburg Mining University of Empress Catherine II presented a new course “3D modeling and visualization”. It has become part of the educational center for digital technologies, which develops the professional competencies of students. The course includes 72 academic hours and is a starting platform for mastering the basics of 3D modeling and engineering software solutions.

The educational program consists of 8 hours of lectures and practical classes, during which students become familiar with the basics of three-dimensional modeling, methods of its application and common mistakes when creating engineering models and presentations. The main focus is on independent work – 56 hours are allocated to consolidate knowledge and create their own 3D model, which students must defend in the final part of the course.

Director of the Educational Center for Digital Technologies of the Mining University, Yuri Zhukovsky, noted that the program is focused on the practical application of acquired knowledge. Students do not just follow instructions, but solve problems on their own, which brings them closer to real working conditions in the profession.

The course uses the Russian computer-aided design system “Compass-3D”, which is widely used in Russia in various industries, including mining, energy and mechanical engineering. Students will be able to model objects such as quarries, power transmission towers, electronic device housings and others, depending on their professional focus.

This course is part of a pilot project to improve the educational system in Russia, which is being implemented within the framework of the decree of the President of the Russian Federation of May 12, 2023. Last year, only 10% of Mining University students used 3D modeling when preparing their diploma projects. With the launch of the course, opportunities to work with 3D models open up already in the second year, which allows graduates to be more competitive in the labor market.

In addition, the Mining University actively cooperates with the developers of Compass-3D and other Russian companies, such as NanoCAD, Renga and CAE-Fidesys. These companies are involved in developing teaching methods and evaluating student projects, which ensures the relevance and quality of the educational process.

Upon completion of the course, students will receive basic 3D modeling skills and will be able to continue their studies in more in-depth specialized courses, which will open up additional opportunities for their professional growth.

A new course on 3D modeling at St. Petersburg Mining University is an important step towards integrating modern digital technologies into higher education. It provides students with the opportunity to learn key engineering skills and significantly improve their competitiveness in the job market. The courses are focused on the practical application of knowledge, which makes training as useful as possible for future specialists.
