The world’s first large-scale plant producing electronic methanol began operating in the city of Obenraa (Denmark). This fuel is intended to replace traditional petroleum products in the shipping industry and significantly reduce carbon emissions.
The company plans to produce up to 42 thousand tons of electro-methanol per year, although at the initial stage the volumes will be about 32 thousand tons. Energy for production will be supplied by solar panels from Kassø, the largest solar park in Northern Europe.
Electro-methanol is considered a promising alternative to diesel fuel and fuel oil, since its use is accompanied by almost no CO₂ emissions. This is especially important for regions with heavy shipping traffic, such as the Baltic Sea.
According to environmentalists, switching to such fuel will reduce the toxic load on marine ecosystems. Fewer harmful particles will settle in the water, which will have a positive effect on marine life. In addition, air quality in port cities and on ships will improve.
However, widespread adoption of electro-methanol depends on government support. Subsidies could accelerate the development of alternative fuels, including bioethanol and biodiesel.
Currently, electro-methanol remains in short supply due to high production costs. Its creation requires a large amount of energy from renewable sources. In Denmark, the main consumers were Maersk, Lego and Novo Nordisk.
In the future, this type of fuel can be used not only in shipping, but also in aviation, as well as the chemical industry. The Aubenraud plant is an important step towards reducing the global economy’s dependence on petroleum products.
The opening of the enterprise demonstrates that the transition to environmentally friendly technologies is possible today. This is a significant contribution to the fight against climate change and environmental protection.
