Norilsk Nickel is introducing advanced seismic exploration technologies to study the subsoil of the Talnakh deposit. The new method will create an accurate geological model, reduce risks and increase production efficiency.
The Polar Branch of Norilsk Nickel conducts unique geophysical research using high-density 3D seismic. This method helps to study the structure in detail deposits, identify fracture zones, tectonic faults and talik areas. Work is being carried out in the area of ventilation shaft No. 8, where more than 3.5 thousand autonomous sensors are installed.
Seismic exploration allows you to “see through” the earth’s interior without drilling. Special devices – electromagnetic sources “Yenisei SEM-100” – generate pulses that penetrate deep into the rock. Reflected waves are recorded by Sercel WTU-508 sensors, analyzing the structure of the soil and identifying potentially dangerous areas.
“This method will help create an accurate geological model, which is critical for safe excavation and efficient production,” explains Ilya Berdyugin, senior manager geophysical Norilsk Nickel group.
Data processing takes about six months. Up to 30 specialists are involved in field work, and about 10 experts at the analysis stage. The result will be a 3D model of the field, which will minimize the risks of water inflows and collapses.
The technology has already been successfully tested at the Oktyabrsky mine, and in 2024 it will be used in the Medvezhiy Ruchey quarry. According to Pavel Kazantsev, head of the seismic exploration team, wireless sensors are more convenient than traditional cable systems and provide high measurement accuracy.
The introduction of seismic exploration is an important step towards smart production. The method improves mining safety, reduces costs and extends the life of mines. Norilsk Nickel confirms its status as a technological leader in the industry by introducing innovations for sustainable development.
