A Chinese cargo ship that ran aground on Sakhalin has become the object of attention of authorities and rescue services. Weather conditions complicate the work to remove it, but measures are already being taken to prevent possible consequences.
An incident occurred on Sakhalin with a Chinese cargo ship that ran aground while loading coal. The ship was in the roadstead when the storm began. The ship’s crew tried to go out to the open sea, but due to bad weather conditions they lost control, which led to the ship being thrown aground.
At the moment, the ship is approximately 200 meters from the shore. No fuel spill was recorded, however, according to preliminary data, the hull may be damaged. Final conclusions about the condition of the vessel have not yet been made, since no accurate information has been received from the captain. Employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Border Service are trying to get in touch with him.
Due to a strong storm, maritime rescue services and divers are unable to approach the ship, but weather conditions are expected to improve tomorrow. Once the storm subsides, authorities will decide what to do with the vessel: whether it will be unloaded or whether it will be refloated.
Sakhalin Governor Valery Limarenko created an operational headquarters to coordinate actions. A high alert regime has been introduced in the region, and booms have already been installed to prevent possible water pollution.
Limarenko noted that the situation is similar to an incident that took place in 2021, when another ship washed ashore. Then the crew abandoned the ship, and the authorities were forced to dispose of it at their own expense within two years.
Regional authorities and rescue services are operating in conditions of a severe storm, but in the coming days the situation should clear up and further steps will be taken to eliminate the consequences of the incident.
The Sakhalin authorities are taking all necessary measures to eliminate the consequences of the incident with the Chinese cargo ship. So far, rescue efforts have been hampered by the strong storm, but improved weather conditions will allow further steps to be taken to safely refloat the vessel and prevent environmental risks.
