The Chinese cargo ship An Yang 2, which was transporting 56 tons of diesel fuel and 706 tons of fuel oil, ran aground near Sakhalin. The crew is safe, but the threat of environmental disaster has not yet been ruled out.
The vessel, named An Yang 2, left the Chinese port of Jiangyin on January 26 and was scheduled to arrive in Nevelsk on February 2. The last position signal was received on January 29 between South Korea and Japan. There are 20 crew members on board, their lives are not in danger and no medical assistance is required, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported.
According to preliminary data, the ship has a hole, but the exact extent of the damage remains unknown due to language barriers. Environmentalists and rescuers have not yet recorded a fuel spill, which allows them to hope that damage to the environment will be minimized.
Governor of the Sakhalin Region Valery Limarenko announced the introduction of a high alert regime. An operational headquarters has been created to coordinate rescue efforts and monitor the situation.
Preparations are now underway for an operation to refloat the vessel to prevent possible environmental damage. Regional authorities and rescue services are working together to stabilize the situation as quickly as possible and ensure the safety of both the crew and the environment.
