The American coal mining company Ramaco Resources did the unexpected opening. An old coal mine in Kentucky purchased in 2023 turned out to be located on a large deposit of rare earth elements.
Ramaco Resources traditionally mines coal in West Virginia and Virginia for the steel industry. Now the company plans to develop production rare earth metals at the acquired field.
The mine will be the first new rare earth mining facility in the United States in 70 years. The design capacity of the facility will be about 1.4 thousand tons of products per year.
Large-scale coal mining at the site will begin in June this year. The company also plans to build a pilot plant for the processing of rare earth metals, work will begin in late summer. Financing The project will be implemented using revenues from the sale of coal.
