GE Aerospace Buys Foundries for $12 Billion to Secure Turbine Blade Supply

While some companies are pouring money into artificial intelligence, the world’s largest aircraft engine manufacturer has decided that the future still depends on metal. GE Aerospace is acquiring Consolidated Precision Products (CPP) for $11.75 billion. The deal will give the company control of more than 20 facilities producing cast components from superalloys and titanium. The rationale is straightforward: without complex turbine blades, an engine cannot be assembled, and demand for these components is expected to rise by nearly a third by 2030.

The paradox of modern aviation is that some of its most advanced digital technologies still depend on traditional casting. Engines are designed using computer models and supercomputers, but an entire production line can be brought to a standstill by a single foundry that cannot cast a required component quickly enough. Kevin Michaels, managing director of AeroDynamic Advisory, described this as the industry’s “black art of manufacturing” and one of its biggest bottlenecks.

The challenge is one of both precision and time. Producing a defect-free turbine blade requires a long and highly sensitive manufacturing process. GE Aerospace expects demand for such components to jump by more than 30% by the end of the decade. Its existing capacity cannot keep pace, so the company has decided to acquire the manufacturers that already have the required casting expertise.

The acquisition of Consolidated Precision Products is not limited to aerospace. CPP’s facilities also supply components to the defense industry and gas turbine manufacturers. That makes the transaction strategically important: GE Aerospace will gain greater control over a critical link in its supply chain.

Competitors are following the same path. Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce are expanding their own casting capacity, while SpaceX has expressed interest in manufacturing turbine blades. The industry has recognized that casting is not an outdated relic, but a bottleneck that determines how many engines can ultimately be built.

GE Aerospace has demonstrated that in a high-tech race, the winners need to control not only software but also physical manufacturing. A single plant capable of producing the right casting can matter more to aviation than a hundred digital models.
