According to the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, dozens of types of valuable minerals (TPI) have been accumulated in technogenic waste. Deputy Minister Dmitry Tetenkin announced this information at the Nevsky International Environmental Congress.
Experts estimate the reserves of useful components in technogenic waste in colossal volumes:
- 10 thousand tons gold
- 500 thousand tons of tin
- 8 million tons of copper
In addition, they contain significant amounts of aluminum, silver, and rare earth metals (REM) and nonmetallic materials. According to Tetenkin, over the last decade alone, the volume of such waste has exceeded 100 billion tons.
Technogenic deposits can become an important source of raw materials for industry. The Union of Prospectors of Russia has been proposing to more actively develop these resources for several years. In December 2024, at the Mining Advisory Council, the chairman of the Union, Viktor Tarakanovsky, noted the high potential for gold extraction from waste.
Recycling industrial waste will not only reduce the burden on the environment, but will also make it possible to obtain valuable metals without additional mining. This direction may become key for resource conservation in Russia.
