Greenland Mines has submitted an application to the Greenland government for a new license covering approximately 262 square kilometers east of its existing Sarfartoq license area. If approved, the company’s total controlled perimeter would grow from 192 to 454 square kilometers, giving it a district-scale position in a rare earth region. The application comes shortly after the announcement of a trilateral security agreement between the US, Denmark, and Greenland.
The expansion is based on preliminary geological work that pointed to rare earth mineralization potential east of the Sarfartoq deposit. The company’s strategy rests on two tracks: advancing its flagship ST1 asset toward development while systematically studying less-explored zones and new targets across the wider district.
An independent resource estimate under the S-K 1300 standard and a preliminary economic assessment have recently been prepared for the ST1 deposit. Under a combined open-pit and underground mining scenario, resources total 6.9 million tonnes indicated at a grade of 1.60% total rare earth oxides, plus 5.3 million tonnes inferred at 0.96%. Combined, this amounts to about 12.2 million tonnes at an average grade of 1.32%.
The preliminary ST1 assessment, under an optimistic scenario, shows a pre-tax net present value of about $2.05 billion. Planned output of neodymium and praseodymium oxides could cover approximately 34% of the total volume of these materials currently produced outside China, based on 2025 consumption levels.
An important caveat: the resource and economic estimates apply only to the ST1 deposit. The broader Sarfartoq carbonatite complex contains other known occurrences — ST40, ST19, ST24, ST31, and ST43 — but these are far less studied and are not included in the current calculations.
The new license application is not yet included in the ST1 resource estimate, mine plan, or NPV and IRR calculations. Resources on this territory haven’t been calculated, and the company hasn’t conducted sufficient exploration to claim the presence of economically extractable mineralization. The area should be viewed strictly as an exploration opportunity at this stage.
