Chinese investment in battery production in Morocco and its impact on global lithium demand

Morocco Invests Billions in Batteries: What It Means for the Lithium Market

Morocco is turning into a manufacturing bridge between Europe’s auto industry and Asia’s battery industry. Chinese companies have invested $6 billion in the country’s battery supply chain, creating new opportunities for lithium producers. However, the sources of raw material for the future plants have not yet been disclosed, which leaves the market in uncertainty.

Morocco has long been Africa’s largest automotive manufacturing and export hub. By mid-2026, the country had exported vehicles and parts worth 93.7 billion dirhams, or about $13.5 billion. Now, through Chinese investment, it is gaining a growing share of the electric vehicle chain, including the production of cells and cathode materials.

The investors’ logic is simple. The European Union has imposed additional duties on China-built electric vehicles, reaching 35% on top of the basic 10% tariff. Production in Morocco makes it possible to get around these restrictions: cars assembled in the country are not subject to European levies. For battery suppliers, this is a chance to establish themselves in the European market without trade barriers.

For lithium producers, the Moroccan project means potential additional demand. However, it has not been disclosed where the future plants will source their raw material. This leaves open the question of which companies will benefit and how much consumption will grow.

Developers are already preparing to compete for a place in the new chains. Australia’s Global Lithium Resources is de-risking its Manna project in Western Australia ahead of a final investment decision expected in late 2026. Manna’s resource base is estimated at 51.6 million tonnes and is considered the third largest in the Kalgoorlie lithium province. The company has already completed an optimized feasibility study confirming a long mine life and robust project economics.

For explorers, Moroccan investment is more a long-term demand signal than an immediate commercial opportunity. For example, Venari Minerals is advancing the Red Mountain project in Nevada with a resource of 500 million tonnes. The company recently applied for funding from the US Department of Defense and joined the Defense Industrial Base Consortium, which opens access to grants and partnerships supporting domestic strategic minerals supply chains.

Morocco could become another source of lithium demand outside China. But the impact on specific producers depends on the scale of future consumption, the origin of the raw material, and how quickly the planned capacity comes into production.
