The State Duma Committee on Ecology supported a bill limiting free access to maps with information about deposits minerals. The new rules are being introduced to ensure national security and will be in effect until the end of 2027.
Amendments limiting access to special maps and diagrams of deposits were approved by the relevant committee of the State Duma. The initiative was taken by the Ministry of Natural Resources, arguing that it was necessary to strengthen the protection of strategic information about the country’s mineral resource base in the current geopolitical situation.
After the new rules come into force, detailed geological the data will be available exclusively to authorized users of the federal state information system “Unified Fund of Geological Information” (FSIS EFGI). At the same time, land owners will be able to receive only limited information about subsoil within the borders of their territories through a coordinate request, without access to the full map.
Previously, Rosnedra published these maps in the public domain, which allowed anyone to study data on mineral reserves. Now such a possibility is excluded. At the same time, access to the register of subsoil plots is limited – it can only be obtained through authorization on the State Services portal.
The restrictions are being introduced based on government order No. 679 and will last at least until the end of 2027. Previously, Rosnedra and VIMS had already developed an interactive map as part of the project “Geology. Revival of a Legend,” but now it will be available only to a narrow circle of specialists.
Thus, the new measures significantly tighten the regime for access to geological information.
The material was prepared with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.
