Rosatom Commissions Russia’s Largest Wind Farm in Dagestan in Record Time

Russia’s North Caucasus has gained a new renewable energy flagship. The Novolakskaya Wind Farm in the Republic of Dagestan is now fully operational, with 120 wind turbines stretching across the site. Built by state nuclear corporation Rosatom in less than 24 months, the project delivers enough generating capacity to cover a substantial share of the republic’s electricity demand.

Each turbine weighs approximately 320 tonnes and stands as tall as a 50-story building. Every unit has a rated capacity of 2.5 MW, bringing the wind farm’s total installed capacity to 300 MW. The project takes advantage of the region’s strong and consistent mountain winds.

Annual electricity generation is projected to reach 879 million kilowatt-hours, enough to supply approximately 240,000 households. For Dagestan, the new facility is expected to cover nearly 9% of the republic’s total electricity consumption.

Deputy Energy Minister Pyotr Konyushenko said that renewable energy is becoming an increasingly important component of Russia’s power system. According to him, the launch of the Novolakskaya Wind Farm will improve energy security in the region while also supporting long-term economic development. Projects of this scale attract private investment, introduce advanced technologies, and help diversify the country’s electricity generation mix.

Beyond power generation, the project has also delivered broader infrastructure benefits, including new jobs, access roads, electrical substations, and transmission lines. The improved infrastructure is expected to enhance the investment appeal of Russia’s North Caucasus.

The Novolakskaya Wind Farm sets a new benchmark for Russia’s wind power industry. By generating 300 MW of renewable electricity, the project reduces reliance on conventional power generation while contributing to the economic development of southern Russia.
