New exploration work for tungsten has started in the Khabarovsk Territory. Geologists will study the promising site in order to create a raw material base for the mining and processing plant under construction and reduce Russia’s dependence on the import of strategic metal.
JSC Far Eastern PGO, part of the state holding Rosgeo, has begun large-scale exploration work for tungsten in the Verkhnebureinsky district of the Khabarovsk Territory. Research is being carried out within the framework of the federal program “Geology: Revival of a Legend” on Stlanikovaya Square. Task geologists — find and localize new areas rich in this metal, critical for industry.
Tungsten is a strategic and scarce raw material. Existing deposits in Russia are gradually being depleted, which increases the need to discover new ones. The search is targeting not only tungsten, but also associated minerals such as tin and molybdenum. The success of the project will significantly increase the mineral resource base of the Badzhal ore district and the entire Khabarovsk Territory.
“Our goal is to evaluate inferred resources and create a basis for future production. This is an important step towards strengthening economic security and reducing import dependence,” explained chief geologist Inna Butchko.
The project is particularly valuable due to its proximity to the Pravourmiyskoye deposit, where a mining and processing plant is planned to be launched by 2028. The discovery of new reserves in the neighboring Stlanikova area can provide this enterprise with a long-term and reliable raw material base, accelerating its development.
Russia has significant tungsten reserves, ranking third in the world. However, most of the world’s reserves and production are concentrated in China. In Russia, current production is carried out at only a few fields. Therefore, new geological research are key to maintaining and growing domestic production of this strategic metal, widely used in the metallurgy, defense and space industries.
Rosgeo’s prospecting work is an investment in the future of Russian industry. The discovery of new tungsten deposits will not only support the enterprises under construction, but will also make a significant contribution to the technological independence of the country, providing the industry with its own critical raw materials.
