Rosneft to Convert Associated Gas into Synthetic Crude in Taimyr Using GTL Technology

Associated petroleum gas from Arctic oil fields will soon become a valuable feedstock rather than a waste product. Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin has announced the large-scale deployment of gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology as part of the Vostok Oil project. Instead of routine flaring, associated gas will be processed into high-value liquid hydrocarbons directly at the production site.

The announcement was made during the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting. Rosneft has completed the development of its own range of GTL equipment and catalysts covering every stage of the conversion process. The technology transforms associated petroleum gas—previously burned in flare stacks—into ultra-clean synthetic crude oil. The synthetic product can then be blended with heavier crude grades, reducing their viscosity and making transportation more efficient.

For the Taimyr Peninsula, the project has particular strategic importance. Producing synthetic crude directly at the field eliminates the need for large-scale additional infrastructure. Lower-viscosity crude will flow more efficiently through the Port Bukhta Sever terminal, improving the logistics of the entire Vostok Oil development.

Although Russia has long sought to commercialize GTL technology for large-scale production of liquid fuels, progress had been slow. By 2026, however, the technology is gaining momentum, with the Russian Arctic becoming its primary deployment area.

Compact GTL systems are already operating at remote fields. One example is the Pyakyakhinskoye field on the Gydan Peninsula, where small-scale GTL units convert natural gas into methanol. The methanol is used onsite as a hydrate inhibitor to prevent ice blockages in pipelines. Previously, methanol had to be transported to the field via seasonal winter roads at considerable cost. Today, it is produced directly at the production site.

From a chemical and commercial perspective, methanol production from natural gas via synthesis gas remains the most mature and successful application of GTL technology in Russia. The product serves both the domestic petrochemical industry and export markets.

According to the Central Dispatching Department of the Fuel and Energy Complex (CDU TEK), gas processing plants and gas treatment facilities handled nearly 33% of Russia’s total associated petroleum gas processing volume in 2025. Wider adoption of GTL technology could significantly increase that share.

Gas-to-liquids technology is evolving from a niche experiment into an industrial solution. On Arctic projects, it addresses three challenges simultaneously: utilizing associated gas, producing a valuable synthetic crude product, and reducing transportation costs. Rosneft’s domestically developed catalyst technology also strengthens the company’s independence from Western suppliers.
